Oktoberfest: Day 4
Oktoberfest: Day 4
9/24/2024
Munich: Marienplatz
Beers Drank: 2 liters
Jake stumbles into the room at 3:45am. He is soaking wet (still raining) and bleeding from his knee and hand (fell on cobblestones) saying he lost his phone. He apparently had a grand ol’ time as well. He remembers riding the thrill rides at Oktoberfest and riding the trains around Munich. He also got on a train heading in the opposite direction from Augsburg. Want to know what is in the opposite direction of Augsburg? Austria. And I had our passports. He also remembers being in a bar ordering gin and tonics. Some nice local put him on the high speed train towards Augsburg, the high speed train we decidedly do not have tickets for. He then walked in the pouring rain from the train back to the hotel from memory.
Being so early, we both passed out until 9am when we stumbled down for breakfast before it closed. My head was still pounding and I had migraine noise sensitivity so the breakfast room was a new level of hell.
We napped for a few more hours. Jake was in a rough state and spent some quality time with the toilet. I roused him at noon so we could search for his phone. So we boarded the bayern back to Munich and headed to the lost and found at Oktoberfest. Finding the lost and found took some time as it was tucked away behind some “tent”. Took even more time since we had to wait in line for Jake to be let inside. No luck, they said to check again in a few days. It was closing in on 3pm so going to a museum was out for the day since most closed by 4 or 5. We were also starving, so priorities.
We jumped on an s-bauhn to head to Marienplatz to explore the Viktualienmarkt (farmer’s market of sorts). We explored the various stalls and settled on a soup stand and people watched.
Mmmm, potato soup
Having scratched museums from our to-do list for the day, we decided to explore more around Marienplatz. We meandered through the market and stopped at Hofbrauhaus beer hall.

It’s a small world because we spotted a fellow Cyclone fan and then another Denverite spotted Jake’s melli and the two of them had a melli bro moment. It’s a thing here (in CO).
We walked to St. Peters Church and debated paying to climb the stairs to the bell tower, but elected to hold off. We went inside instead and looked around. There were two dead saints, which led to a long explanation to Jake about relics, catacombs, and votives. Side note: the dead saint is the patron saint of spinsters and sinuses, seriously, couldn’t make this up if I tried.
After I took this, Jake pointed to the sign that said no picture taking, oops
Walked around Marienplatz some more, exploring the inside of the Glockenspiel and headed to Herrmann souvenirs which sells Black Forest cuckoo clocks. They were expectedly expensive and Jake recommended I sleep on the decision before deciding. Feeling relatively recovered from yesterday’s shenanigans, we decided to hit up another beer hall for dinner. So we jumped on the s-bauhn and headed for Augustiner-Keller. They still have wooden kegs and a super cool cellar.

After dinner we headed back to Augsburg and had a hard time staying awake on the Bayern. We crashed as soon as we got into the hotel room.
Our heroes say goodbye to Germany and start the journey back home with a long layover in Istanbul.
