Oktoberfest: Day 7
Oktoberfest: Day 7
9/27/2024
Munich: BMW Welt & Oktoberfest - Augsburg
Beers Drank: x liters & x train beers
We slept in until 9:30am and would’ve slept longer except we craved breakfast. It was a slow start to the day. We donned the lederhose and dirndl and ventured out around noon. Our goal was to redo Oktoberfest the correct way, the smart way, with water and food and splitting liters. First, we wanted to visit BMW Welt.
The trains were busy, absolutely jammed packed with fellow festival goers. The bayern brought us to Munich Hbf and from there we jumped on the u-bahn towards Olympic Park. Arriving at the park we headed straight to a wurst stand and had ourselves some beers and currywurst.
BMW Welt was impressive and futuristic. Jake got to nerd out on auto stuff.
This vehicle was covered in velvet
There wasn’t quite enough time for the museum so we just looked around the showroom and gift shop before heading to the Theresienweis for Oktoberfest Take Two.
Train beers
This time we entered through a different entrance, near the thrill rides. Our Canadian Bayern friend had recommended two rides, the Toboggan and Devil’s Wheel. Just our luck, the Toboggan was smack dab at this entrance. So we went for it. The gist is that a very fast belt brings you up to a stairs that climbs to the top of a wooden slide. You are then given a rug to slide down on. The belt is crazy fast and alot of people fall, they do have staff to help if you want it (I did). It’s humorous to watch people attempt the belt on their own. At the top I was given a rug and told to keep my knees up. And down I went, flying down, dirndl skirt up near my face, likely flashing the entirety of Oktoberfest. Did I care? Not a lick, it was so much fun!
We tried the lost and found again, with a much shorter line but still no luck. Remembering we were going to be smart this time, we got kasespatzle from a stand and then settled at an outdoor table at the Kafer tent. We split a liter of beer and gained some table mates, some local Germans enjoying snuff and wine.

And then the rain hit.
Sharing Jake’s raincoat
We finished our beer and went to go wander some more. We got pasta from a stand that make it within a parmesan rind, sooooo good. The rain was continuing and I had forgotten the umbrella at the hotel so we were becoming more and more saturated. The temperature was hovering in the 50s. So we attempted to find a dry place to enjoy more beer at various tents. At one point we were huddle under a stairway to a tent with a group of university Spaniards. One of them was shivering and kept saying how cold he was. At one point he asked Jake and I if we had seen the movie Day After Tomorrow. Confirming we had, his response, “That’s me.” I turned to his friend and asked, “Como se dice ‘dramatic’?” Everyone burst out laughing.
Then we got kicked out from under the stairs. The rain wasn’t stopping, the temperature wasn’t rising, the likelihood of getting a spot inside less and less. So we called it a night. We wanted to be dry and warm so we scrapped any plans to stay at the festival, electing to eat at the brewery in Augsburg and then enjoy the sauna at our hotel.
Instead of backtracking to the central station, we headed to the closer train station which had us getting on the Bayern at Pasing station. The wind had picked up so we walked to the attached mall to stay warm while waiting. We picked up some more train beers and once in Augsburg headed to the local brewery.
Service was slow, even for Germany, and Jake was getting hangry. Couple that with a difficult language barrier which resulted in only me getting a beer. The kitchen had already closed and she didn’t understand Jake’s pointing at my beer to indicate he wanted one as well. To prevent a hangertatrum, I sent Jake on ahead while I finished my beer. We had been passing by a cool looking tavern walking to and from the train station each day. I told Jake to head there and see if the kitchen was open. I would finish my beer and meet him there. Despite his hanger, he was very hesitant to separate. I was the only one with a phone and the last time he solo adventured, he almost ended up in Austria. I gave him my phone and told him we would meet at the tavern, no exceptions.
Off he went, and I finished my beer. And then we ended up separated again.
Kidding! Just kidding, Mom.
I met up with him at the tavern which was amazing. Jake told me that when he first got there he asked the server if they needed reservations. Mind you, there was only one other table besides the one we were at with any people. The server had looked around the place slowly before turning back to Jake and asked, “Do you have a reservation?”
Our server was a riot. The food was delicious. The atmosphere was perfect. Jake and I said more than once we could see ourselves living in Augsburg and having this tavern as our drinking spot. Our only regret was not having discovered it sooner in the trip. Having heard that this was our first time in Germany, our server gave us a complimentary dessert. It was delicious. For some reason the tavern was playing Christmas music and the serving staff had no idea why.
The local tavern
After overfilling our stomachs and two rounds of beer we waddled back to the hotel only to find that the sauna had closed hours ago. We weren’t too upset and fell asleep quickly.
Our heroes are going to attempt Oktoberfest Part 2, but first a stop at the BMW Welt.
