Thru hike training [verb]: training yourself for a long distance hike, done so by gradually increasing demands mentally and physically through cardio, strength building, and elevation gains. Not to be done in one single hike.
Our My confidence was running high after completing Strawberry Peak the weekend prior. The next peak on the list that wasn’t buried under 3 ft of snow and didn’t require a permit was Mount Wilson. It’s known for its famous observatory and tends to be a busy trail. Desiring less traffic and feeling that we could handle the additional mileage we elected for the less popular, longer original Mt Wilson Trail over the newer, shorter, busier Chantry Flats trailhead.
Only a 10 hour, 14.2 mile, 5,600+ ft elevation gain jaunt. Just kidding, it was a “persistent bastard” as Jake put it more than once. It. Just. Kept. Going. Up. And some idiot thought it was a good idea to carry a fully loaded Yoda for additional training. It’s me, I’m the idiot. My legs went on official strike for the following two weeks.
Our tramily packed up the Yellow Submarine for some camping and hiking fun at altitude. Our goal: summit our first Colorado 14er, Mount Sherman.
